Day #2 of the Amazing Adventures of the RB Road Warriors

Up at 5:30 to hit the road bright and early – ok, just early. No one was particularly bright – the dogs weren’t even ready to get up. Jammer grabbed coffee and yogurts but there was not a Starbucks to be seen. We weren’t worried – we knew one would show up sooner or later – little did we know that it would be SOOOO much later… but I digress..
Did we mention that we are purchasing gas like it is going to be illegal soon? We wish we could somehow capture the oil spil in the Gulf and siphon it right into Mike's truck! Seems like we hit just about every gas station and we are loving the truck stops – they have those really WIDE pull in lanes – read: no backing up required. Well, we seemed to have missed the sign that said ‘Next Services 29 miles’ – we were riding on Empty. And praying… lots… there was absolutely NOTHING out there in the middle of NOWHERE. When to our surprise we found a Flying J on the horizon!! Once again we could fill up and be on our way. Also discovered that Mike’s truck holds 26 gallons and we only put in 22 at the Flying J – we could have gone another 25 miles!!! So Gaye is so enamored with the Flying J now (she is going to join their Twitter and the Facebook page) that she is now changing her handle to Flying J (aka FJ) and Nancy is now Jammer (aka J).
Valuable knowledge, signs, names of towns and just plain interesting sightings:
- Sign that said ‘Vote Corruption Out’ - who can argue with that?
- The reader board on the freeway that said ‘sign test in progress’ What is up with that? Who is grading their progress?? When will they be finished?
- Sign on the highway that said ‘Eagles on the Highway’ Who are kidding? We never saw any eagles on the highway – what was there for them to eat?
- Sign on freeway – ‘Game Crossing’ – we assumed it meant ‘Fair Game Crossing’!
- (are any of you guys laughing as hard as we are writing this???? Maybe an altitude thing…
- We got take out at Mom’s in Salina. FJ went inside to get it while I turned the car around (no small feat) and watched the temp escalate to 104 degrees. FJ said the waitresses could have been Flo and Maude. The sign outside said it was the best food. We believed them. Our cold turkey sandwiches were like all the others we have had. Nothing special.
- Did we tell you that we passed a semi truck like it was standing still?? Well, it was!!! Pulled over to the side of the road with the hood up and the driver scratching his head! We FINALLY passed something (besides roadkill).
- Oh, and did we happen to mention we are really good at the very easy crossword puzzles??
- We are listening to a book cd that Gaye found that we think could very well be a new addition to the New Testament of the Bible. It would fit in right after Revalations. This is serious stuff…. All about Jesus’ best friend, Biff. You will just have to read it for yourself.
- One of the highlights that we have come to look forward to on our amazing trip is the names of towns – or lack thereof of interesting names. Who names their towns names like:
Noname
Notus
Plano
Rifle (but they do have a Starbucks so they have sort of redeemed themselves)
Silt (really – they can’t think of anything better???)

Had spectacular views at one of our bazillion rest stops. Hard to explain - but we can tell you how to get there :) Lovely (?) local vendors selling must-have merchandise....in return they would love to chat about a dental plan as they had almost 1 tooth each!

- Now it must be time to clue you in on exactly how hot it was on this trip. We got lunch and it was 104 degrees. We still had lots of elevation to gain. J just about declared mutiny on FJ when she turned OFF the ac as the truck was overheating on the long climbs. Who needs or bothers to digest what information a temperature gauge is telling you? It got pretty darn hot. I texted a dear friend and she advised me to just keep tossing things out of the truck or trailer until the load was light enough – we were thinking do we toss the dogs or the big tv???
- Finally pulled into Frisco and our destination around 9:00 – late. We were ready to be finished – our trip odometer read 1498 miles. Whew!!! 2 days!! Greg was so excited he unloaded the entire trailer. We just watched him and drank our wine! We set up our sleeping accommodations and called it a night!!!
